National Park Week

Did you know that this week is National Park Week? That means that all 58 national parks throughout the country are free to the public this week. Did you also know that Utah has more of these parks than any other state? And, that two of these parks are located within close proximity of Moab, Utah? That is right — Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park are both fewer than 50 miles from Moab. We decided to take a break from the metal-crunching hardcore trails, but you can still get your four-wheeling fix at both Arches and Canyonlands.

Much of Arches is paved, with short hiking trails to some breathtaking views like Park Avenue, Balanced Rock, and the Delicate Arch, which can be found on Utah’s license plate. There is even a campground in the park, with clean bathroom facilities and expansive vistas. We heard a lot of foreign languages in the park and saw license plates from all over the country and beyond. We even spotted some Michigan plates on cool modified Jeeps, as Mopar employees were visiting Arches on the same day we were. Even more exciting though was the Salt Wash Trail, a non-paved route on the west end of Arches National Park.  Having a high-clearance 4WD allows you to leave the crowds in the RVs and hybrids behind, and witness parts of the park that few visitors see.

Canyonlands has even more opportunities for 4WD enthusiasts, with rugged tracks that require suspension lifts, aggressive tires, and off-road lights. Many of the trails in Canyonlands require multiple days to traverse for a real backcountry experience. It is important to note the distinction between “four-wheel drive roads” and “off-roading” though. Always stay on existing roads, particularly in national parks.  And, like any trip to the desert, bring plenty of water and ensure that your 4WD is in good, working condition. Even as close as Arches is to Moab, it is still a long walk back to town!
