Congratulations Greg!
Lucas Oil Off-Road Series Rounds 9 & 10 – Glen Helen Speedway
The 4 Wheel Parts Motorsports team was fired up to be racing in our hometown of Southern Cal at the famous Glen Helen Speedway. The team had a solid test session at the track one week prior to the race and dialed in the #10 Pro 2 truck. The results showed in qualifying as Greg clocked the 4th fastest time out of 17 trucks! Thanks to a favorable inversion draw, Greg would start the off-road race from the pole.
Saturday night – Round 9
Starting from the pole can be high pressure, but Greg was feeling confident knowing the truck had been fast all weekend. When the green flag dropped Greg battled with Bryce Menzies for the lead into turn 1. He cleared Bryce and was leading but bicycled the truck (up on two wheels), around turn 4 which allowed the always fast, Rob Machaeran to get by. Greg recovered and followed in a close 2nd for the next several laps. Carl Renezeder was starting to apply pressure, but couldn’t quite get there. Then suddenly on lap 6 Carl lost his cool and overdrove the corner slamming into the back of Greg’s truck causing a barrel roll and a half with the truck ending up on its roof. The 4Wheel Parts truck lost a lot of fluids while upside down and the team decided to play it safe and call it a race. Renezeder was black flagged for his stupid, bone head move and later apologized. “The apology doesn’t change what happened. We had a great truck that was capable of winning the off-road race. I can’t believe a veteran like Renezeder would drive like such an idiot. It’s disappointing for our whole team but will be back and ready for battle tomorrow!”
Sunday night – Round 10
The field was set for Sunday’s race based on Saturday night’s results. Unfortunately for the 4Wheel Parts team that meant Greg would start on the last row in 16th position. He had his work cut out for him! When the green flag dropped he started picking off competitors. “The truck was really hooked up and I could accelerate out of the corners better than most of the other trucks”. By the halfway caution flag Greg had passed 10 trucks and was sitting in 6th place! At the restart he made a pass moving up to 5th and was following Renezeder! “I saw him a few trucks in front of me and was pushing hard to catch him. The closer to the front of the field the harder it is to pass these guys!” Two trucks suffered mechanical issues while Carl and Greg were hot on their tails. With a few laps to go it was a battle for the podium. Greg settled for a solid 3rd place finish knowing the truck had been used up getting to the front! “I wanted to give Carl some payback, but I am really happy to get our first podium finish of the year for our team, sponsors, family and friends! The competition level in the Pro categories is intense so anytime you leave with a trophy it’s a good weekend. Our off-road race team is really strong and I am confident we can get to the top spot on the podium this year!”
The team heads back to Speedworld in Surprise, AZ for the next stop on the Lucas Oil Off Road series.
