Greg Slade

Hi, my name is Greg Slade and I have the best job in the world! Every day, I get to be surrounded by everything that is custom in the off-road industry. 4 Wheel Parts gave me the opportunity to turn my hobby into a career. I started working for 4 Wheel Parts when the Raleigh, North Carolina store first opened 3 years ago. Now I am the store manager for the same location. I offer everything including technical assistance, off road advice, local clubs, and store hosted events. I also try to be actively involved in our regional community. Whether it’s a local race or fundraiser, I try to attend as many events as I can.

In 1994, I got my first 4x4 vehicle and immediately started to modify it to enhance its off road and trail riding capabilities. This vehicle was a **gasp** 1980 Toyota pickup and it introduced me to the wonders of off-roading. I immediately started off with a 4" lift kit, 33" tires, and I ditched the bed in favor of a custom flatbed (which can handle more abuse).

16 years later and I’m still wheeling and enjoying the great outdoors! The only difference now is that I have a Jeep for my backwoods exploring. You can usually find me bouncing around the Uwharrie trail system at Badin Lake or taking the hard line in Mt. City Tn. at the Callalantee Off-Road Park. When I can manage to sneak away from work for more than a couple days, I enjoy loading up my big tire Jeep YJ and carrying it to Harlan, KY for a long weekend of adrenalin-pumping riding up the big rocks.

I have many Jeeps in my stable but my favorite is my 1995 YJ Jeep Wrangler named “Herbie.” This Jeep has more than a few battle wounds and scars. Herbie has been beating up and down the trails and the local racing circuits for the last 5 years or so. It’s pretty easy to recognize Herbie on the trails. When we are together, we try to take the hardest, most challenging line up the trail. We’re also known for putting on a show and frequently rolling or flopping for fun! Herbie has always been the underdog since he sports 36" TSLs, no lift, a lot of trimming, and four very angry squirrels under the hood.

I enjoy getting back to the trail whenever I get the opportunity. I find there is nothing more relaxing than sitting around a campfire and swapping lies about the day’s escapades on the trail. One thing is for sure – you will never meet a stranger while wheeling. There is always a strong sense of brotherhood among the people who enjoy trail riding or just wheeling in general.

After using my trail rig to race for the last few years, it sure has taken a beating and is no longer the comfortable trail rig you’d want to spend the afternoon in.  So call me old, but I now require a soft and supple suspension, good heat, and air conditioning to make for an enjoyable weekend on the trail.

Lifting the Jeep

My main goal through the entire build of my 1995 Jeep Wrangler, or “Herbie,” was to keep it simple and utilize as few parts as possible to gain maximum tire and undercarriage clearance. Follow with me as I outline how I got an extra 6” of clearance under the Jeep easily with no more lift!

A 1995 YJ Wrangler Named “Herbie”

Herbie 1995 YJ Wrangler

I’m a huge Jeep enthusiast and have owned a number of Jeeps throughout the years.  I currently own 3 Wranglers, which I enjoy wheeling and racing.  One Wrangler in particular is my favorite. I would like to take the time to introduce you to Herbie, my low-buck 1995 YJ Wrangler with a lot of character. Herbie came along after I became bored wheeling my 42”, coilover, V8 rig. I wanted a more stock vehicle that would make the terrain challenging again. That is how Herbie was born!
